Although we are a small school, Gann athletes have turned in impressive results. Gann competes in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) leagues and fields highly successful baseball, girls soccer, boys basketball, girls basketball and coed cross-country teams among others. Gann regularly competes for NEPSAC tournament berths, league championships and NEPSAC tournament championships. Most Gann students will play on at least one team before they graduate.
Director of Athletics Sue Johnson
Sue Johnson brings a wealth of experience in competitive athletics to Gann Academy. Prior to taking over the Gann athletic program, Johnson coached Division I women's basketball for 20 years. She began her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Yale, from 1987-89 before becoming the recruiting coordinator at Princeton from 1989-1995. In the spring of 1995, Johnson became the top assistant women's basketball coach at Boston College. Two years later, she was chosen as head coach at the University of New Hampshire. Johnson went on to lead the UNH Wildcats to their ever postseason berth in 1998 with an appearance in the WNIT and three appearances in the America East semifinals.
Johnson also enjoyed an impressive athletic career at Yale playing basketball, softball and lacrosse. As a member of the Yale womens basketball team, she earned First Team All-Ivy and Academic All-American honors in consecutive seasons, an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and graduated as the program's leading scorer. She still holds nine Yale records and was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball and Walt Whitman High School Hall of Fames in 2010.
Assistant Director of Athletics-Athletic Trainer "AJ" Rourke
Andrea "AJ" Rourke came to Gann in 2007 as the Head Athletic Trainer and quickly added Assistant Athletic Director responsibilities. After graduating from Marietta College in 1993 with a BS in Sports Medicine and a NATA Certification, Rourke enjoyed athletic training posts with Auburn and Grafton High School, the Orleans Cardinals and Chatham Athletics of the acclaimed Cape Cod Baseball League, and a ten-year stint at UMASS-Boston.
Rourke is also a professional photographer and serves as the Gann Athletic Department official photographer. Most of the photos you will see on the athletics pages are by AJ Rourke.
Go RED Heifers!
If you come to Gann, you’ll grow to love the Heifers just as much as we do. And you'll appreciate the humour of having a cow as a mascot.
