Acceptable Use Policy

Gann Academy Acceptable Use Policy 2009-2010

Statement of Purpose
Gann Academy’s computers, Internet and network resources, and related technologies are for academic and school-related business purposes. The spirit of this policy is based on four principles: respect, privacy, sharing, and safety.

Scope
The Academy’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) applies to all users who access the Gann Academy network using academy-owned or personal equipment.

Supervision, Filtering, and Monitoring
In an effort to maintain the rich educational and business environment, network activity may be filtered, logged, monitored and reported. Monitoring and filtering are not intended to restrict access to appropriate school or business-related resources.

Infractions and Consequences
It is expected that members of the Gann Community are honor bound to the school rules.  State and Federal laws and school rules that apply to conduct, apply to the use of school network resources, including the Internet, email and other shared or personal technologies. Infractions may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the student and personnel handbooks.

Privacy
The expectation of privacy can never be assumed or guaranteed.

Non-Educational or not acceptable Activity
Non-educational or otherwise not acceptable activities include, but are not limited to:

  • sharing yours or using another’s password or network identity
  • circumventing or attempting to circumvent network security measures or with computer or network configurations
  • unauthorized installation of software or hardware on school computers or network
  • running applications not authorized for one’s user or group privileges
  • forging or altering electronic communications
  • viewing or transmitting offensive material: foul language, violent or sexually explicit material, etc.
  • use of school resources for illegal and unethical activities: hacking, gambling, criminal activities, commercial purposes, etc.
  • participating in unapproved, unsafe, or insecure web activities: web-based instant messaging, Internet chat rooms, web activities that disclosure anyone’s personal information, etc.
  • participating in activities such as: computer and/or online games, use of proxies, peer-to-peer services, web hosting sites, non-educational forums, blogs, and social networking environments (e.g. Facebook, etc.)
  • excessive time participating in non-educational activities such as: online shopping, streaming entertainment sites, sports sites, and others that usurp bandwidth, storage, and other school shared resources, or cause a lack of productivity
  • use of unlicensed software and the illegal copying and/or distribution of software
  • disrespectful or hurtful behavior towards others via Gann’s technology services
  • creating or propagating viruses, distributing and/or responding to chain emails, spam, hoaxes, mass mailings, broadcast messages
  • storage of an excessive amount of personal material on school storage devices: non-school related files, images, video, music, etc.
  • use of unauthorized devices on the school network: servers, wireless access points, game devices, phones, etc.
  • unauthorized entry into secure network spaces
  • unauthorized removal or failure to appropriately sign out and check in school equipment in a timely manner
  • misuse of school equipment and/or failure to return school equipment in good condition
  • theft of school technology resources

Liability
Gann Academy disclaims all liability for the content a user may access on the Internet and through email, for any damages suffered in the course of or as a result of a user's Internet or email use, and for any other consequences of such use.

Changes in Policy
Gann Academy reserves the right to change this policy at any time without prior notice.
