Al Shlosha Devarim haOlam Omed Upon three things the world stands: On Torah, on service to God and on acts of loving kindness These often quoted words from Pirke Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), can be considered Judaism’s most important elements. The work of Gann Academy’s Hesed Comitttee relates to the third pillar, if you will, g’milut chasadim, or deeds of loving kindness. Our Hesed Committee exists to offer assistance to members of the Gann community who are in need, for any reason, such as illness, injury or death in the family. As much as we exist to help those who need a hand, the Hesed Committee also provides the opportunity to members of the Gann community to perform the acts of hesed that are so highly valued in Judaism. What are the specifics? Typically, we do things like:
Communication occurs almost entirely by e-mail. Please e-mail me (Marilyn) if you are interested in participating on any level. You can participate once or often – even if you don’t cook! I will occasionally send out e-mails to the entire community when there is a need for much help. Family names are not used in these community wide e-mails. Logistics can get a bit complex with our geographically diverse community, so please watch for e-mails relevant to your region. I will also e-mail those of you who have indicated an interest in Hesed activities. Please also let me know if you have question or an idea, or if you are aware of a need. Have a great year! |
