Six Weeks in Israel
Week one of the sophomores' myIsrael excursion is complete, and oh what a week it was!
"Being in Israel with my grade has been one of the most challenging but also one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in as long as I can remember," said Shira Hoffer.
myIsrael is a 6-week immersion into Israeli society, culture, and history for sophomores. The program is an extension of the Gann curriculum and incorporates class learnings from students’ previous semesters into practical, hands-on experiences in Israel.
The group spent their first week exploring the Negev. They celebrated Israel’s 70th birthday with fireworks, singing, and dancing in the streets of Be'er Sheva. They hiked and biked, climbed and camped, and discovered the natural beauty of the Negev. "Getting to experience Israel in an authentic way with all my friends," continued Shira, "I can feel my connection to Israel shaping in new and thought-provoking ways every day!"
This week, the students are joined for a weeklong arts workshop by their Israeli peers from Gann's sister school in Haifa, Irony Hey. Afterward, the students will focus on the modern history of Israel as they explore Tel Aviv—visiting historical sites from the founding of the country, conducting street interviews, and visiting a number of museums. Then on to Haifa to reconnect with the Irony Hey students for a weeklong intensive experience in one of four tracks: environment, high-tech, community, or sports. The group will finish up in Jerusalem with a focus on the political and social issues facing Israel and the region.myIsrael was co-created by Gann, Israeli educational experts, and staff from Ironi Hey High School. CJP’s Boston-Haifa Partnership, which has been a leader in fostering connections between young Jews in the Boston area and Israel, has been an important partner in making this program a reality.
