Shalom from Israel

Gann's myIsrael 2019 trip is in full swing! Our tenth graders are in week three of six in their journey exploring the land of Israel through an exciting mix of experiential learning, camping, sports, art, high-tech, community service and more.

"Being in Israel with my grade was one of the most challenging but also one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in as long as I can remember," said Shira Hoffer '20 who participated in the myIsrael experience last year.

myIsrael is a 6-week immersion into Israeli society, culture, and history for sophomores. The program is an extension of the Gann curriculum and incorporates class learnings from students’ previous semesters into practical, hands-on experiences in Israel.

It's been an eventful two weeks for the sophomores. The group walked the coast of Caesarea taking in the aqueducts and Roman ruins. They hiked the caves of Mount Carmel, lounged on the beaches of Tel Aviv, volunteered at Save A Child's Heart, and explored Jewish meditation and mystical art in Tsfat. Oh, and they took in the depth of Yom HaZikaron (Israel's memorial day) and celebrated in the streets of Tel Aviv for Yom Ha'Atzma'ut (Israel's independence day). "We were able to experience Yom Ha'Atzma'ut at its finest," said Eliana Hiam and Yonah Kalikow, "seeing the fireworks and dancing to the music!"

This week, the students are camping in the Negev with their Israeli peers from Gann's sister school in Haifa, Irony Hey. Afterward, the students will focus on the modern history of Israel as they explore the North—visiting historical sites from the founding of the country, conducting street interviews, and visiting a number of museums. Then on to Haifa to reconnect with the Irony Hey students for a weeklong intensive experience in one of four tracks: art, environment, technology, or sports. The group will finish up in Jerusalem with a focus on the political and social issues facing Israel and the region.
