Introducing Dr. Jerry Katz as Interim Head of School

Dear Gann Community,
We are pleased to announce that the Gann Academy Board of Trustees has completed the process of identifying and appointing an extraordinarily qualified and experienced interim Head of School. The Board of Trustees has named Dr. Jerry Katz as Interim Head of School for the 2018-2019 school year.

Dr. Katz has 30 years of experience as a head of school and is a recognized and respected educational leader. He is, perhaps, best known locally as the former Head of School at The Park School, where he spent 20 years establishing his reputation for excellence and integrity. After leaving The Park School, Dr. Katz became Head of School at Rodeph Sholom School (RRS), a Reform K-8 day school in New York City. At RSS, Dr. Katz led a strategic four-year process that involved significant strides in Development, Enrollment, Governance, and other fundamental areas. He returned to Boston from RSS last year and has been advising a number of schools in conducting searches for new leaders and coaching new heads of school during their initial years of leadership.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Katz was Principal of Bowen School in Newton. He has served as both the Associate Director of The Principals' Center at The Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Director of the Harvard Summer Institute on Leadership and School Improvement. He received an Ed.D. in Teaching, Curriculum, and Learning Environments from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an M.Ed. in Special Education from the Boston University School of Education, and an A.B. in Psychology from the University of Michigan. He is a former trustee of The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and was a faculty member of the NAIS Institute for New Heads. He also has extensive experience with respect to interim positions and head search processes.

We believe that Dr. Katz will bring extraordinary experience and wisdom to the role of Interim Head of School and that he, together with our extraordinary faculty and staff, will help guide us through this important transition year. Toward that end, we look forward to engaging in a year of learning and reflection as Gann moves forward into its next chapter. Please note that Dr. Katz will not be a candidate for the permanent Head of School position, and we expect this engagement with Dr. Katz to be for the 2018-2019 academic year.
We look forward to inviting the community to meet Dr. Katz after Passover. Please read the note below from Dr. Katz.
We also have been organizing and are in the process of launching our search process for a permanent head of school. More details to come on that shortly.
As always, please send questions and comments to We are grateful for your partnership.

Dear Gann Community,
I am delighted to write to you as Gann's Interim Head of School for 2018-2019.  I am excited about getting to know you and about my opportunity to lead the school forward over the course of the upcoming academic year.
As a long-time Boston area independent school educator, I have observed Gann's development and admired its accomplishments under Marc Baker’s extraordinary leadership. Gann’s mission and values resonate deeply with me, and I am excited to step into this journey with you.
I truly am honored to join you at Gann and look forward to meeting you all this spring.  I cannot imagine a more compelling and extraordinary school to lead.
