New Courses Offered Next Fall

February 14, 2017
It’s time to register for next year’s courses at Gann and the choices are abundant: more than 150 courses in the humanities, math, sciences, languages and Jewish studies, not to mention the arts and electives that range from psychology to statistics to thermodynamics.
“We continually refine our curriculum to ensure that our course offerings reflect the interests of students and the skills and knowledge they'll need to succeed in college and beyond,” says Jacob Pinnolis, Director of Teaching and Learning.

Highlights of next year’s new offerings include:
  • French becomes our fifth language. Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew and now French help promote the school's mission to create global citizens and teach about other cultures through language.
  • We’re adding our fourth advanced physics elective—Quantum and Nuclear Physics. Quantum and Nuclear Physics joins Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Optics for those students who want a deeper dive into physics.
  • We’re expanding our computer science offerings, which range from a foundational class to demanding college-level classes, focusing on data structures, algorithms and computer organization.
  • We’re offering advanced Jewish Studies electives in Tanakh and Talmud for students wanting especially challenging text study in Hebrew and Aramaic.

How do you select courses when there are so many options? “We have two complementary goals when it comes to course selection,” says Head of School Rabbi Marc Baker. “We want kids to delve deeply into subjects they are passionate about but also try out new areas that may be a little out of their comfort zones.  It’s through intellectual risk-taking that we often grow the most.”
