Girls Varsity Softball and Tennis Clinch League Crowns

June 2, 2017
Congratulations to the girls varsity softball and tennis teams for winning the 2017 Independent Girls Conference (IGC) championships, making this year one of the two most victorious in Gann athletics history. The girls varsity volleyball team, as well as the girls and boys varsity basketball teams, also walked away with league crowns this winter.

The Gann softball title—the third consecutive IGC championship—followed a 17-9 home win in which Gann held off the hard hitting and solid fielding of Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall. Senior catcher Jayme Callum was named the league's most valuable player— the second time in her career. In the fall, she was also named IGC MVP in volleyball.

“Entering the season, I knew we could hit up and down the lineup and I was confident in our solid defense,” explained softball Coach Jim Nole. “The biggest question mark was replacing starting pitcher Aly Kruglak—who graduated last year. But pitchers Rachel Silverstein and Shira Small stepped up for us all season long, and perhaps most importantly, we had an unbelievable senior class that was undaunted by the pressure. Those cool heads are what separated us from the pack.” The softball team was captained by a senior triumvirate of Callum, Chelsea Todtfeld and Shayna Pepe, who leave a great legacy.

On the tennis court, Gann's varsity girls clinched the seventh championship title in the program's history with a 4-1 win over Cambridge School of Weston last month, putting an exclamation mark on an undefeated season “We had an impressive roster of young talent, mixed with strong senior leadership that made us a formidable team,” said Coach Boxer Clarke. “I was very proud of the girls’ efforts.” Sabrina Blotner, Miriam McNerney and co-captain Zoe Weiss were named IGC all-stars.

Eleven of Gann’s 13 varsity sports have won at least one league championship over the years, for a total of 44 since the school opened. Last year’s record was identical to this year’s, with five league crowns.

Other league MVPs this year were Ben Edry (boys varsity basketball), Shayna Mael (girls varsity basketball) and most recently, Elan Ganz (boys varsity lacrosse) and Zoe Weiss (girls varsity tennis). This makes an amazing six MVP awards for our Gann student-athletes in one year!

“Congratulations to all of our athletes on a great season and best of luck to our seniors as they venture on to their next adventure,” said Director of Athletics Pamela Roecker.
