David Ball Joins Gann Academy

Gann Academy is thrilled to announce that Mr. David Ball will be joining Gann next year as our new Assistant Head of School for Student Experience. David joins us from the Upper School at Milton Academy, where he has spent the last seventeen years as Upper School Principal, Academic Dean, and member of the history department. David brings a unique combination of deep administrative experience, incredible humility, and an unwavering commitment to advocate on behalf of students. David’s educational philosophy aligns deeply with our philosophy here at Gann: he is committed to building a student culture based on intentional values in an environment that prizes student voice and leadership. David also has an expansive, flexible view of what students can achieve, regardless of learning style.

David will supervise all Gann functions related to the students’ experience outside the traditional classroom including student culture, student advising, college counseling, learning supports, counseling and wellness, athletics, student leadership, and nursing. He will work closely with Simon Luxemburg, Gann’s Director of Jewish Student Life, and Dr. Marion Menzin, Gann’s Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning to ensure a seamless student experience.

David’s passion for student-focused work led him to this particular position. He shared with us:

“From the moment I set foot on campus, the core strengths of Gann were palpable. Grounded in values and committed to community, Gann empowers its students to wrestle with its central question: Who will I become? I am honored to join a community so dedicated to holistic student growth, and I am eager to get to know all the students, families, and faculty who make Gann such a special school.”

Michelle Black, President of Gann’s Board of Trustees notes: “Over the past few years Gann has secured its unique place on the map of independent high schools in the Boston area. It has excellent and rigorous academics, combined with an unwavering focus on student exploration, growth and well-being, and the school is deeply grounded by our Jewish values and the strength of community. I am not surprised that an educator of David Ball’s caliber has chosen Gann as his next professional home. His arrival provides our entire community with an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments in this, our 25th anniversary year.”

We look forward to welcoming David to campus starting in July.

First of all academically, my child has been able to explore multiplicity of academic interest in very deep ways. Her teachers are devoted to her, have an allowed her to explore her interests, have supported her interest and nourished her quest for knowledge. They celebrate her interest, her never-ending questions, and her capacity for learning. And they meet her where she is and value her as a learner and human being.

Friendships-this might be something unique that other people might not say but I do think there is something unique about the friendships and deep relationships that the kids have with each other at the school. I’ve tried to think about why so that you can put something down in writing and I think it has something to do with community and spirit, but also kids have grown up together and share the same values and so their level of trust and understanding for each other is just something to be really deeply admired. Kids come in and they are happy to see each other and they really value each other as people.
