From Robobowl to States: A Season of Growth in Robotics

Gann Robotics students at the FTC State Championship, celebrating months of teamwork, creativity, and hands‑on engineering.

Last Sunday, Gann’s Robotics teams took part in the Massachusetts FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) State Championship, an event they had earned a place earlier this season. The day brought together some of the strongest robotics programs in the state and offered our students a chance to test months of engineering work in a high energy, collaborative environment.

This season’s momentum began at December’s Ryken Robobowl and continued through the February FTC qualifier hosted at Gann, where R.A.B.B.I. earned second place in alliance with Notre Dame Academy’s CouGears, and both R.A.B.B.I. and the Maccabots received awards — the Innovation Award and Design Award, respectively. Those achievements secured Gann’s place at States and reflected the strength and creativity of the program.

In the weeks leading up to the championship, students refined their robots through extensive building and testing. Many routinely spend upward of thirty hours each week programming, 3Dprinting, laser cutting, and iterating on their designs, demonstrating the deep investment robotics inspires at Gann.

At the State Championship, teams competed in fast paced engineering challenges that demanded precision, adaptability, and collaborative problem solving. Between rounds, they analyzed performance and made real time adjustments — moments that captured the blend of technical rigor and teamwork at the heart of Gann’s STEM program.

Throughout the competition, students exemplified professionalism and cooperation, supporting peers, and celebrating creativity across the event. Their preparation, teamwork, and genuine enjoyment of the experience were evident, closing out a season marked by curiosity, perseverance, and the joy of building something meaningful together.

A student reflection: Benjy L. shared, “I am proud of the strong improvements in communication skills throughout the season. These were on full display throughout the hustle and bustle of the competition on Sunday.”
