Sabrina Strapp ’24 Returns with Yale’s “Mixed Company” A Cappella group

Plus an exclusive, hands-on workshop for the ShenaniGanns

This past Wednesday morning, Gann students were treated to a performance by “Mixed Company”, a celebrated co-ed a cappella group from Yale University. Gann alum Sabrina Strapp ’24 acts as the Performance Manager for this talented group and was kind enough to arrange an exclusive show for members of the ShenaniGanns in the Black Box Theater. The visit gave students a glimpse into what a cappella can look like at the collegiate level.

The thirteen charismatic members performed a set of songs ranging from their spirited trademark opener to hip hop/pop songs like “American Boy” by Estelle and soul classics like “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. A highlight of the performance was a moving rendition of the Hebrew song “Ozi V’Zimrat Yah” arranged by Sabrina. It was an honor to hear this familiar Hebrew song sung by a visiting group. The group was blown away by Sabrina Strapp’s lead vocals in “Mona Lisa”, the emotional crux of their set.

After their concert (and an extended, joyful round of applause), our guests split the ShenaniGanns into their soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections. Each Yale singer joined their corresponding section and coached the students on a song that they subsequently performed as a unified group. Seeing our own a cappella artists collaborate with “Mixed Company” was a unique experience for everyone there.

Just before heading back to classes, the two a cappella groups were eager for the ShenaniGanns to share their own magic. Our own Jacob “Spike” Kraus ‘09 led them in performing two songs that showcased the range and talent of this group and our guests from Yale whooped and cheered as our high schoolers hit some impressive notes.

Thanks so much to Sabrina for coordinating this unforgettable performance and master class for our students. We love welcoming back our Gann graduates to share their passions and enrich our community!
